Shadow Resist - AAA Cards Blog Hop

What do you think is something fun about stamping?
One thing I think is fun about stamping is learning new techniques.
Here's a tutorial for one that I love to make a card that looks like this . . .
It's called Shadow Resist.

          Supplies -
Stamps - a solid image stamp (larger images work best)
you could use Jumbo Butterfly Trio from Stampendous
                 - Stampendous Loving Messages
Card Stock - any light to medium color.  I used Very Vanilla
Ink - VersaMark Ink pad and any other ink you would like.  I used Crumb Cake
Other - Heat Embossing Tool, Clear Embossing Powder, Stampin' Sponge,
                 Small Binder Clip, Tissue

Here we go:
1.  Begin with your light-colored card stock and gather your supplies

2.  Cut a Stampin' Sponge into quarters.
Cut a wedge about 1/3 of the size from the quarter.
Cut the wedge in half, removing the narrow end.

3.  Squeeze the sponge lengthwise and place into a
small binder clip.  This creates a sponge similar to a
Sponge Dauber, but softer - more linear and less round.

4.  Stamp solid image with VersaMark ink and heat
emboss using Clear Embossing Powder and the Heat Tool.

5.  Ink up the sponge.  Starting on the embossed image,
rub small circles towards the edge of the image.
Keep motions small and gentle so just a
small highlight or halo of sponging
appears around the image.  Continue inking the sponge and
circling at the edge of the embossing until all edges are highlighted.

6.  Once complete, gently rub image with a tissue or
soft cloth to remove any ink from the embossed areas.
Then simply continue to stamp and embellish as you wish.

And there you have it!  A stunning card that is Clean and Simple.
Everyone and anyone will love to get this card.
So . . . what's something you think is fun about stamping?

  3. .....THUD!! that's my breath-taken away, jaw-dropped response to your card that is outstanding, awe-inspiring gorgeous! I'm obsessed with butterflies and yours here...oh my, oh my, oh my!! Swoon inducing of epic proportions! I've just recently dabbled with sponging, so the timing of your technique is perfect! Thank you for the tutorial! And yes, this card appearing in a mail box would guarantee a mega watt smile! My favourite thing about stamping is, like yours, trying new techniques, and especially, seeing what others do and learning from them!! This hop/contest is so much fun...Off I go. Happy Sunday!!

  4. Fabulous technique Julia! I just love heat embossing! I just love sponging too! You have demonstrated what a perfect marriage they make! I can see me trying that technique a lot. One thing I love about stamping is the versatility of a single stamp set. I love seeing images transformed across different cards by different people using different techniques. People's creativity is a magical thing!

  5. Oh boy, Julia, what a lovely card!!! Stunning butterfly and so beautifully done with the embossing and sponging!! Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how you have done this!!

Something I think is fun about stamping ...all I can say (ask) is: is there anything that is NOT fun about stamping??? I am not artistic at all and can not even draw a proper stick man, so the greatest fun for me is to lift up the stamp and to think : WOW did I really do that - a perfect image and I don't need to be able to draw or paint to make a beautiful card!!! That is the greatest fun for me!!!

    Have a super Sunday!!
    Greetings from Africa!!

    1. LOL! Love your comment about what is best about stamping. I agree - I don't think of myself as an artist, either and enjoy the fact that I can just stamp an image. Yay!

  9. I admit I'm an adult who never truly grew up. I love coloring and that's always been my favorite part of stamping. Whether I use rubber stamps or digi stamps, my primary thought when selecting it is, "How will it color up?" I love the resist technique you showed us and need to dig out supplies to do some of it again. It's something I've not done in so long but have enjoyed it every time I done it. Thanks for the reminder, Julie!

  11. What an absolutely lovely effect! I like so many things about stamping: that it's always evolving, but the older tried and true techniques are still viable and effective; that it's a relaxing, creative outlet; that I can make something someone else will cherish; that it satisfies my need to be creative.... I have had to curb my spending because of the plethora of new stamps that come out on a daily basis, but can always find something in my huge stash that will work. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm still overjoyed with wonder every time I heat emboss something. It's like magic.

  14. For starters this XL stamp is an all time favorite, and the technique you used is one of my favorites for one layer cards, love it! What I love about stamping is precisely the fact that you can do so much with the same basic elements ink and stamps, and vary from one technique to another creating totally different styles while you do it.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

  21. What an amazing card you made!! I can't wait to do it too! It is one of my favourite techniques and that is also part of my answer. Fun of stamping is that there are SO many cool stamping techniques to do that you just can't do with digital images.

    1. I agree, Riette. Digital is great, but I run into a lot of - I can't do this, I can't do that with my digital images. Stamping is fun to have it in your hand, turn it around, and stuff like that. Good answer!
